When You Say Nothing at All

It’s amazing how you can speak right to my heart
Without saying a word, you can light up the dark
Try as I may, I can never explain
What I hear when you don’t say a thing

The smile on your face lets me know that you need me
There’s a truth in your eyes saying you’ll never leave me
The touch of your hand says you’ll catch me wherever I fall
You say it best, when you say nothing at all

All day long, I can hear people talking out loud (ooh)
But when you hold me near, you drown out the crowd
Try as they may, they can never define
What’s being said between your heart and mine

The smile on your face lets me know that you need me
There’s a truth in your eyes saying you’ll never leave me
The touch of your hand says you’ll catch me wherever I fall
You say it best (you say it best) when you say nothing at all

Oh, the smile on your face lets me know that you need me
There’s a truth in your eyes saying you’ll never leave me
The touch of your hand says you’ll catch me wherever I fall
You say it best (you say it best) when you say nothing at all

That smile on your face (you say it best)
(When you say nothing at all) the truth in your eyes
The touch of your hand lets me know that you need me (you say it best, when you say nothing at all)

(You say it best, when you say nothing at all) nothing at all
(You say it best, when you say nothing at all) nothing at all
(You say it best, when you say nothing at all) nothing at all

Nothing at all

Facts About the Song When You Say Nothing at All Lyrics by Ronan Keating

“When You Say Nothing at All” is a country song originally written by Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz. It was a hit song for four different performers: Keith Whitley, (1988); Alison Krauss, (1995); Irish singer Frances Black, (1996) whose version brought the song to the attention of Irish pop singer Ronan Keating, whose 1999 version was his first solo single and a number-one hit in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and New Zealand.

Overstreet and Schlitz came up with “When You Say Nothing at All” at the end of an otherwise unproductive day. Strumming a guitar, trying to write their next song, they were coming up empty. “As we tried to find another way to say nothing, we came up with the song”, Overstreet later told author Ace Collins. They thought the song was OK, but nothing special.

Ronan Keating version

“When You Say Nothing at All” was released as the debut solo single by Irish singer-songwriter Ronan Keating. The song was recorded for the soundtrack to the film Notting Hill and also appeared on Keating’s debut solo album, “Ronan”.

This cover was released on July 26, 1999, in the United Kingdom. It peaked at number one in the UK, Ireland, and New Zealand. The single is certified double platinum in the UK and platinum in Australia, Denmark, and Sweden.

The Song When You Say Nothing at All Meaning

This song is about a couple that are so connected, they don’t need words to communicate. Just a look or touch can say it all. The lyrics describe how this special connection transcends the need to use words. Instead, the couple is able to communicate silently, with just a smile, a look, or a touch.

The song expresses that these unspoken gestures tell the other person of the deep love and commitment between them. It conveys that sometimes when it comes to love, saying nothing says it all.

“Sometimes actions speak louder than words, as the old saying goes,” Don Schlitz (co-lyrics writer) added, “and we just found another way to say that. Sometimes if you listen carefully enough with your eyes, you can hear a whole lot more than you hear with your ears.

In 1999, Ronan Keating, still with the Irish boy band Boyzone, recorded it for the romantic comedy Notting Hill at the suggestion of Richard Curtis, who wrote the screenplay. It plays in a scene where Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts make a love connection.

In America and across Europe, this song remains popular at christenings, marriages, and funerals.
